Scotland’s first-ever study of Outdoor Arts, Circus and Spectacle is here! Commissioned by Articulation, it shows how OACS strengthens communities, boosts wellbeing and deserves real policy recognition.

Articulation, in collaboration with a research team from Queen Margaret University has created the first study to explore the impacts of Scotland’s Outdoor Arts, Circus and Spectacle (OACS) sector. This new report brings together voices, data and stories from across the country to show why OACS matters: it creates accessible cultural experiences, strengthens communities, and supports Scotland’s wellbeing and national identity.
Despite its impact, OACS often goes unseen in policy terms, unlike in countries such as Ireland where formal recognition has helped the sector thrive. By documenting Scotland’s own landscape for the first time, this research lays the groundwork for better support, clearer visibility and a stronger future for OACS.
We share these findings in a full report and a companion summary report that are now available to download.
