Surge runs projects to develop outdoor arts, physical theatre and circus in Scotland. We work with artists, performance companies and educators at all levels of experience. We provide mentorship, support and professional development for artists at all stages of their career. We work with creative artists and communities through our Community Street Theatre Tour and through touring our large-scale community engagement projects. We deliver our annual Surge Festival in July, which brings new Scottish work and international performances to Glasgow audiences. We also run Techbox which is a space for professional artists, designers and developers to explore how technology can be incorporated into outdoor arts, physical theatre and live performance.

Michelle is a Circus Artist with a Masters in Theatre and Performance Practices. She makes bold new work using a blend of circus imagery and theatrical conventions to heighten and expand the meaning and narrative of her work.
Michelle’s performance/deviser credits include the “No Show” by Ellie Dubois, “Nosedive” and “So Far So Good” by Superfan Performance, “Coppelia” by feathers of Daedalus, and other freelance creative projects in and around the UK. Michelle has performed her solo acts around the UK, most notably at Glastonbury, in London and in Edinburgh.
Michelle recently created and performed her 40 minute solo piece “Waiting” based on Waiting for Godot, directed the Aerial Edge Foundation Course students ensemble show “The Manor,” and has previously worked as an outside eye and movement director on the award winning “Everything I See I Swallow” by Shasha and Taylor Productions.
Michelle’s work combines Circus and Theatre in an intricate way to bring out the delicate balance between success and failure, and risk and reward, and how these can be used as a metaphor for viewing our internal lives.

Hannah Ayre specialises in producing socially engaged projects and events that resonate with diverse audiences, while engaging and uniting people. She partners with arts, environmental and heritage organisations. Together, they create immersive experiences, focusing on wellbeing, nature connection and heritage learning. She strives to create fun, accessible projects which empower participants and audiences while creating memories and a lasting legacy.

Her work is often created from fluorescent materials which glow vividly under ultra violet/black light. She designs the work digitally, before bringing it to life in the physical realm. She is fascinated by geometric shapes, colour and the joy her work can bring to audiences during the colder months.

Her work as a light artist has led to commissions for numerous winter light festivals and special events. She works solo and also frequently collaborates with other artists, designers, technicians and communities. She creates site-specific, one-off installations, as well as sculptures which are designed to tour.

She is based in Edinburgh and works locally, nationally and occasionally internationally.

I originally trained in dance before being persuaded to take my feet off the ground and try aerial arts. From there I was sold and performed internationally in aerial and dance for several UK & Irish Companies, directors, and in large scale events for over 20 years.
Currently I am Artistic Director of All or Nothing Aerial Dance Theatre, a company founded in Edinburgh in 2006. I direct and choreograph the majority of the company’s work including many outdoor performances. Also create opportunties to experience aerial at all levels and develop talent pathways for both those in the recreational and professional sector.
Outwith All or Nothing I mentor, teach and work as an aerial director, choreographer and advisor with a variety of companies across the arts sector.

Findhorn Bay Arts (FBA) is an award-winning creative producer of cultural events and activities rooted in the communities of Moray. We have grown from our first Culture Day celebration, held in 2013, to establish a year-round programme of high quality arts and cultural activities across the region, including the flagship biennial Findhorn Bay Festival.
We enable creative experiences across a wide range of artforms and genres, encouraging artists and communities to take expression in whatever form is most appropriate to them. Jamie is a Glasgow based artist, theatre maker, VJ and designer who tours work nationally and internationally. He has collaborated with some of Scotland’s leading artists and presented his own critically acclaimed original work at major venues and institutions.

He trained as an actor a the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland – graduating in 2009.

He has developed a practice in multiple disciplines, practices and genres – defying easy definition – from the music industry to theatre and dance where his work is frequently in demand. He commonly works with digital mediums like 3D Animation, VR, Lighting, Sound, Composing and Film. He has pioneered the use of live VJ techniques and projection mapping in the live performance.

I am a theatre maker, clown and director based in Glasgow, Scotland. After studying Drama and Physical Theatre in Scotland I trained further in clown, physical and outdoor theatre practices in Poland, Denmark, Italy and the UK.

I work on the assumption that through art we can articulate our experiences, reflect on them and imagine other possibilities. I strongly believe that this process should be accessible, relatable but can also embrace the non-realistic, highly stylised or abstract.

In 2022 I was awarded a Federation of Scottish Theatre Assistant Director Bursary. I currently facilitates a physical theatre class with health & wellbeing charity Nemo Arts.

Aerial Edge has been Glasgow’s circus school since 2007, with professional and recreational classes and courses, training sessions and an act creation/rehearsal space – and of course our fabulous flying trapeze. It’s also a fantastic performance venue and we stage shows throughout the year. Our Pro Track Programmes are set up to allow customised part-time classes and self-training sessions for continuing professional development.

The four-week full-time Circus Intensive and four-month Foundation Course teach a wide range of arts and are designed for people who want to explore their circus potential. Then our One-Year Professional Development Course has been created for those who want to continue to build their skillset with a focus on one or two disciplines. It includes all the supporting classes to develop a well-rounded professional.
There are performance opportunities in all our full-time courses. In the Foundation Course and Professional Development Course, you’ll create and perform a solo/duo act and create an ensemble performance with a professional director.

Circus is for everyone – shape, size, age and experience aren’t barriers. People love the fun and friendly vibe at Aerial Edge, which allows you to explore your potential without fear. Our thriving Youth Circus has a performance pathway as well as student-led sessions where instructors offer guidance on technique while facilitating the freedom to find your own way through movements.

As a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC), we price everything as low as we can so that as many people as possible can find the joy of circus. Youth Circus has a Sponsored Places scheme.
